ESA Wonderful Wednesday - September 25, 2013

Happy Wonderful Wednesday Everyone!

If all goes well, I am sending this posting out one day early; because I have a 12-hour day tomorrow and will be home too late to make sure I post in a timely manner. You may not know, but I am a registered nurse and work for a Blue Cross Blue Shield Plan. My job is a technical medical policy writer. Just what does that mean? I research scientific literature and clinical trials, present to our plans Medical Directors, and determine the coverage position we will have. It is a very different kind of medical professional job. When I did work in the hospital, it was in obstetrics – labor, delivery, post-partum, and newborn nursery. I talked childbirth education for nearly 14 years and worked with pregnant teens.

Time management is an important attribute as a leader. One has to think and plan ahead, think through time constraints, and prepare for contingencies. Without time management, goals may become unreachable. How we use our 24 hours, 1, 400 minutes, and unbelievable 86,400 seconds is critical for achievement. If you want to achieve more, serve more, influence more, or change the impact of what you have to offer others, you need to utilize the time you have in those 86,400 seconds. How we manage our time becomes something we do all the time… As I mentioned last week, it is a habit. Now, there are times I run right up against a deadline, but most times this is because I did not really start far enough out prior to the deadline. However, I still move ahead one moment at a time, one task at a time, and one event at a time. In addition, yes, I tend to arrive early… a time thing! I also start Christmas shopping on December 26th. Maybe I carry this time management to an excess!

IAWL Trivia Question for this week… There is a relationship between “It’s A Wonderful Life” and “ET The Extra-Terrestrial”. What is it?

Reminders from earlier posts:
So far, I only have two sisters signed up to participate in the Holiday Sweater Contest. I know many of you have festive sweaters in your closets. I also know you have creative minds to come up with original holiday sweaters. Let me know if you are planning to participate. I am working on the judging and prizes!

Barbara Perales, Association of the Arts Chairman, announced at the August Board Meeting the Craft Faire to happen at the November State Board Meeting in Bedford. She will be posting the table reservation form via The TESAN in the next couple of months. Therefore, it is time to start working on making those crafted items you will be selling in November and get your table reservation to Barbara! The Crafts Faire is always fun and fruitful!

Additionally, if you have not sent in your registration for the November State Board Meeting to District VI, please do so as soon as possible. District VI has arranged for a lunch on Saturday for an additional $12.00. I am looking forward to seeing you there for the Craft Faire, the Holiday Sweater Contest, donating to the troops as part of Hope for Heroes, and Sunday's Board Meeting. District VI is waiting to hear from you!  Register now!!! I will attach the registration form.

ESA Wonderful Wednesday - September 18, 2013

Happy Wonderful Wednesday Everyone!

Owen and I are sitting here watching "MoneyBall" on FX about the 2002 Oakland A's and the wheeling and dealing winning streak and season. I really enjoy Baseball and Football. But I should be working on starting to send out MAL letters to those members that ESA Headquarters has listed as such to invite them to be included in the 2014-2015 State Roster. I am letting the movie take me away from a task that could be considered daunting. This lead me to remembering a posting Suzy Winters, now the IC Jr. Past President, posted on her blog last spring regarding good habit versus poor habits and the relationship with leadership. This is in part what she posted:

"Your success in life and ESA will be determined by the kinds of habits that you develop over time. The habit of setting priorities, overcoming procrastination, and getting on with your most important task is a mental and physical skill. This habit is learnable through practice and repetition, over and over again, until it locks into your subconscious mind and becomes a permanent part of your behavior. Once it becomes a habit, it becomes both automatic and easy to do.  Whenever you complete a task of any size or importance, you feel a surge of energy, enthusiasm, and self-esteem. The more important the completed task, the happier, more confident, and more powerful you feel about yourself.

The completion of an important task triggers the release of endorphins in your brain. These endorphins give you a natural “high.”   The endorphin rush that follows the successful completion of any task makes you feel more positive, personable, creative, and confident. These habits of success are important to each of us but are especially critical for everyone in a leadership position."

So I will need to take my own advice... Maybe the task is not so daunting when I start it step by step, bit by bit!

Now onto blogs tasks at hand... IAWL trivia from last week: If George Bailey had never been born, what would Mary Hatch become? Who played Mary Hatch Bailey? Most know she had a television show with her name as the title, but do you remember the television show she was in before her death? What was the character name? Well, did you guess Donna Reed? If so, you are correct. Donna Reed played Mary Hatch Bailey. She starred in a television show bearing her name until 1966. Donna Reed somewhat stepped away after the television show to attend to her children, marriage, and political endeavors. In 1984, she replaced Barbara Bel Geddes as Miss Ellie Ewing for one year on the hit show "Dallas". However, in 1985, Barbara Bel Geddes returned to "Dallas". Donna Reed expired in 1986. What a career!

Reminders from earlier posts:
Next, our State Project Director, Barbara Atkinson  has the following request when sending donations for the March of Dimes and the Helen Pearson Scholarship Fund. Barb has asked to please make sure your chapter and district checks are made out to the Texas State Council; and, then make a notation on the check for either March of Dimes or Helen Pearson. Do NOT make the check out to the March of Dimes or Helen Pearson Scholarship Fund as this must be causing an issue with the bank. Additionally, Barb has asked to continue filling the paper dime holders that are to be turned in at the November Board Meeting.

Convention City has asked me to pass along this directive when submitting your checks for May 2014 Convention Registration. Checks must be made out exactly like this – “Texas ESA State Convention”. The financial institution requires this to process the checks into the Convention City bank account. District Presidents, please pass this requirement onto the members of your district. A corrected form has been submitted for posting on the Web Site and in the TESAN.

ESA Wonderful Wednesday - September 11, 2013

Happy Wonderful Wednesday Everyone!

Today is the anniversary of a very sad day in America, the home of the brave and land of the free!  Many thoughts and feelings emerge each year on this day.  I remember the TESAN article written by Tammy Probst not long after 9/11. She was reflecting that the Twin Towers she had recently visited in New York had been horribly destroyed, the lives lost, the families forever changed, and our outlook on life impacted for years to come........ In my mind, this is not the day to address many aspects of ESA of education, service, and association, but a day for remembrance.

However, I do have some announcements...
At the upcoming November State Board Meeting, we will be supporting our troops. Joyce Kotzur, Caring and Sharing Advocate for Hope for Heroes, has put together a donation program. The following is the information and request she sent me to post here before the Board Meeting:

Bring your items in a plastic bag and I will collect them at the meeting; pack & send to Operation Shoe Box and they will  mail to our Troops about Dec. 1st.

NEEDED ITEMS:

  • Soap
  • Deodorant
  • Wet wipes
  • Toothpaste (travel size)
  • Ballpoint pins/writing paper

Should you know of other items that they would like please feel free to bring.  Please feel free to call me at 210-696-0400 or e-mail me at joyce3411@att.net.

Before I get to the Birthday Recognition, how about IAWL Trivia Question: If George Bailey had never been born, what would Mary Hatch become? Who played Mary Hatch Bailey? Most know she had a television show with her name as the title, but do you remember the television show she was in before her death? What was the character name?

Happy, Happy, Happy Birthday to the following sisters for the next week:

ESA Wonderful Wednesday - September 4, 2013

Happy Wonderful Wednesday Everyone!

Owen and I often "Pay It Forward" when we are able to do so... Just what is it? Pay it forward is a term describing the beneficiary of a good deed repaying it to others instead of to the original benefactor. The concept is old. We enjoy anonymously picking up the meal tab for someone in a restaurant. I am not telling you this to get kudos, but to explain the joy we feel when we have done a random act of kindness. It really is fun. We wonder about the person's reaction, perhaps the happiness, the relief, the gratefulness, and the recognition, whatever it might be. Service we do in ESA is not random, but it is done joyfully, the same feeling we experience paying it forward. There as well we may wonder about the recipient's happiness, relief, gratitude, and recognition. Paying it forward is part of a leadership role, showing by example to the recipient. Hopefully, that recipient will take the lead and pay it forward to another, and so on down life's road. If you you have the opportunity to pay it forward, do so as a random act of kindness for others and for yourself. Just some thoughts...

While the weather may still be on the warm side, school has started, football season has started, and I am beginning to plan for Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas! Now one might ask, how does this affect Texas ESA? Well, first in my mind is the November Craft Fair associated with our November State Board Meeting. Second will be the First Holiday Sweater Contest during the have thought of some “rules”… Here they are:
1.   Safety first – no electrical supported sweaters; in other words, participants cannot be connected to an extension cord.
2.   Cordless battery operated designs are allowed.
3.   Sweaters must be worn by the participant, no hanging the sweater on a hanger and must be worn during the craft fair to allow those in attendance to view and vote.
4.   All participants must take their sweater home at the end of the competition… I have plenty of my own!
5.   Pictures taken may be posted on our Texas State Council Web Site, FaceBook Page, ESA Wonderful Wednesday Blog/Email, TESAN and/or Jonquil.
6.   Categories and prizes are under development. Just know that monetary prizes are not available…

We are looking for fun, creativity, cute, ugly, outlandish, colorful, and interactive between members… and so much more! PLEASE let me know if you are planning to enter the contest. Just send me an email with your intentions to wearing a Holiday Sweater. This will help me prepare for voting and results tabulation. My deadline is November 1st to hear from you!

The November Board Meeting will be supporting our US Troops. With that said, our Caring and Sharing Team Advocate for the Hope for Heroes Program, Joyce Kotzur. When we have more information to share, I will post in my weekly Blog/Email. Stay posted.

I just learned today that September is National Literacy Month. This fits perfectly with our IC President’s focus of Literacy. ESA Headquarters has information and ideas of what you and your chapter can do to promote literacy in America. Our Literacy for Life Advocate, part of the Caring and Sharing Team, LeeAnn Henderson is just the right person to contact for more information as well. One of the Board Meetings, likely February 2014, will be dedicated to Literacy. I will have more information about that after the first of the year.

Donna Carter, Caring and Sharing Team advocate for Warm Welcome, has asked me to forward this message:
“I will be delivering our collection of donations from the August State Board meeting on Saturday, September 7.  Project Linus Blanketeers will be meeting from 2 pm to 9 pm.  I would love to have ESA Sisters assist me with the delivery and maybe help Project Linus prepare fabric for quilts and blankets.  No one has to stay the whole time.  I haven’t been to a workday since they changed the time to 2 pm.  The calendar requests you bring something for a potluck lunch.  I plan to be there at 2 pm. Any one interested can contact me at dcartermail@verizon.net or 972-412-8067.  The meeting is at: Midway Hills Christian Church, 11001 Midway Rd., Dallas, which is just north of Royal Lane on the west side of Midway.”

Now for our IAWL Trivia Question from last week: The actor played a police officer in the movie. Who is he and what was his character’s name? The same actor went on to play in a classic and popular television series. Can you name that show? He also, starred with John Wayne in westerns, war, and drama/romance (believe or not) movies. I had a few responses this week.  Yes, the actor was Ward Bond who played Bert in the movie. There is a popular “rumor” that his character name and that of Ernie was the original Bert and Ernie used in Sesame Street. However, from my research, that is merely a rumor. Ward Bond portrayed the wagon master in the television series – “Wagon Train”. From my research, Ward Bond was in 23 movies with John Wayne.  Apparently, they played football together at USC and both were asked to be in their first movie in 1929. Moreover, that is where they both got their starts in Hollywood.

Happy, Happy, Happy Birthday to the following sisters for the next week:
Jamye Wilson – September 9 of Epsilon Pi, District 5
Marjorie Phipps – September 9 of Delta Zeta, District 5

Regarding the State Roster CD: if you desire to change any of the demographics of officers and chairmen/committee members, the excel document must be saved over to your computer first. The file came to you on the CD or folder as a “read only”. I believe this is how it works on a CD when copying and pasting. Should you have any questions, please contact me.

If you desire to get the blog postings sooner than later, please let me know by email at sueannesa@yahoo.com and I will add you to a mailing group list I have set up. To see the blog, click on the following address: http://esawonderwednesday.blogspot.com/.
